It’s Our Future: Broadband Isn’t Just the Web

12 Oct

The FCC seems to want to link the U.S. for broadband in much the way copper wire and telephones did last century. Fragmented technology makes that difficult.

When Ed Whitacre, CEO of AT&T (T) retired in 2007, a telecom lobbyist commented to me that Whitacre was one of the last die-hard believers in providing telephone service to everyone. This person was concerned that incoming CEO Randall Stephenson would focus less on landlines and more on growing revenue and generating profit, at the expense of rural customers. That’s coming to pass not just at AT&T, but at other telcos as well. And as I watch what’s happening at the FCC with regard to the National Broadband Plan, as well as the kerfuffle over whether or not Google Voice should provide access to rural areas, where it would have to pay high call termination fees, I realize that the FCC is embarking not on a National Broadband Plan, but a National Communications Plan.

And it isn’t just about providing access to the Web. It’s about creating an infrastructure to link the country in much the same way that copper wires and phones linked the U.S. during the last century. We may look down on that network now, but millions of Americans still use it and it’s served as the foundation upon which the Web as we know it today has been built. Still, thanks to the fragmented nature of the technologies and types of businesses that deliver broadband, that idea of a unified communications infrastructure (as well as the need for it) is fading.

Broadband, from the last mile that connects our homes to the long-haul networks that move the traffic around the world, is our voice, our video, our Web and our connection to one another. Our shared last-mile networks are the party-line equivalent of the telephone system for this century, and the FCC needs to help create regulations that take such a reality into account. No, getting broadband to everyone isn’t a profitable proposition for the carriers, but the U.S. has a responsibility to make it happen.

BP awardings Application Development Contracts

27 Aug

BP bears granted contracts in the domain of applications programme development and maintenance to IBM, Accenture, and 3 big top Indian outsourcers.

BP was before outsourcing this services to 40 armed service suppliers, and determined to rationalise the amount to five, a BP spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

The five suppliers selected were already bidding services to BP, she added.

The total contract value is £1.5 billion (US$2.5 billion) across 5 years, which was 500 million pounds glower than BP had budgeted for the contract.

IBM and the three Indian outsourcers — Wipro, Infosys Technologies, and Tata Consultancy Services –said separately on Wednesday that they had been selected by BP for five-year contracts, for an undisclosed amount.

IBM said it had bagged the largest among the contracts awarded by BP at the end of a 12 month program by the British oil and gas company to consolidate its application development and maintenance vendors. The BP spokeswoman declined to discuss the share of each vendor in the total contract value.

Like its Indian competitors, IBM is likely to deliver a significant portion of the work for BP from its Indian operations, according to informed sources. This strategy would have enabled IBM to compete on price with Indian providers, the sources said.

An IBM spokesman in India declined to comment beyond the company statement.

Indian outsourcers have a dominant share of about 40 percent of the global market for outsourced application development and maintenance services, Siddharth Pai, a partner at outsourcing consultancy, Technology Partners International (TPI), said on Wednesday.

Indian outsourcers have been increasingly focusing on the European market to reduce their dependence on the U.S. market.

GE Launch Technology Centre and Create New 1,200 Jobs

27 Jun

Next week,General Electric (GE)’s launch new advanced technology center in southeast Michigan and create new 1,200 Jobs. The center, called the Advanced Manufacturing and Software Technology Center, will be about 25 miles outside Detroit in Van Buren Township. G.E.’s plan is to hire engineers and scientists in the region who have been put out of work by the shrinkage in the auto industry.

GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt announced at a news conference in Birmingham on Friday that his company would create 1,200 jobs this year and there would be more to come at its new $100-million center for advanced manufacturing technology and software in Van Buren Township.

Immelt said GE would set up a Web site for that purpose perhaps as early as next week. Gov. Jennifer Granholm, standing by Immelt’s side at the news conference, said the jobs would pay in the range of $100,000 per year. The presence of skilled local talent was one reason Immelt cited for GE’s choice of Michigan for a center that could have gone anywhere.

The Michigan Economic Growth Authority has approved $74 million in potential tax credits for GE over 12 years. The estimated return to the state during that period from increased tax collections would be $146 million, she said.

Diversifies of Virtualization From Dell

17 Jun

PCWorld.com reported that Dell has begun offering preconfingred servers, storage modules and software for customers who want to get things up and running more quickly than with custom orders.

Announcement of variety of business-centric products and services by  Dell on June 17 covers: primarily servers and consulting offerings designed to make the creation of data centers, and the implementation of virtualization, a more efficient task for the enterprise and SMBs alike.

Praveen Asthana, Dell’s director of enterprise storage says:

Now we’re saying you can be up and running in 30 minutes, not in a week.

He said it’s a good option for small- and- midsize businesses without expertise in server deployment. Channel Web calls it a comprehensive virtualization portfolio based on Dell’s acquisition of EqualLogic, one that will bring down the level of complexity and cost for smaller companies.

The new storage array, the PS4000, also could be attractive to larger organizations looking to implement a larger number of small SANs, according to Search Storage.

Study Says Internet Make Families Spend Less Time Together

16 Jun

I got news that could be not too good news for families. Recent study says that internet make families spend less time than before.

A new study by the Annenberg Center for the Digital Future has drawn a comparison between the decline in family time and the rise in Internet use and the popularity of social networks. The study said the Internet is so engrossing, it demands much more attention than other technologies. The Internet can disrupt personal boundaries in ways other technologies wouldn’t have.

The study said 28 percent of Americans interviewed last year report spending less time with members of their households. That’s nearly three times the 11 percent who said that in 2006.  And while the study doesn’t place the blame on the Internet, it does note that the decline in family time does coincide with a rise in Internet use and the popularity of social networks.

Logitech to Cut 15 Percent of Workforce

25 May

Got this news from cnet.

Swiss peripherals manufacturer Logitech plans to cut approximately 15 percent of its salaried workforce. Logitech has more than 9,000 employees worldwide.

In a statement Monday, the company cited the deepening economic gloom as the reason for the cut.

“During the December quarter, the retail environment deteriorated significantly,” Logitech Chief Executive Gerald Quindlen said. “We experienced varying degrees of weakness across all geographies and channels, as our customers reduced inventory levels in the face of weaker consumer demand. Moreover, we expect the economic environment to worsen in the coming months, and we are therefore taking significant actions to align our cost structure with what is likely to be an extended downturn.”

Logitech, which has offices in Silicon Valley, Switzerland, and Asia, makes products such as keyboards, mice, Webcams, headphones, and remote controls. On Tuesday, it introduced several products at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Logitech has sales offices in major cities in North America, Asia, and Europe, including in the United Kingdom.

In its announcement about its restructuring, the company withdrew its growth targets for sales and operating income in its fiscal year 2009, and did not provide any new estimates.

Logitech will give details of the job cuts and restructuring with its fiscal third-quarter results, due on 20 January. It expects savings from the restructuring to begin to show in the first quarter of its fiscal year 2010.

Sustainable Living Environment a la Singapore

23 May

Singapore will step up its efforts to build a sustainable living environment. The Environment and Water Resources Ministry, which spelt out its plans in its addendum to the President’s Address delivered on Monday, said its vision is to create a ‘Sustainable Singapore’ where people use limited resources efficiently and innovatively, and proactively develop capabilities to deal with emerging challenges.

On boosting resource efficiency, Environment and Water Resources Minister Yaacob Ibrahim said his ministry will encourage recycling and conservation efforts through public education and working with the community.

The government will also invest in new capabilities to reduce waste and control pollution, in addition to Singapore’s expertise in clean water and energy.

Dr Yaacob said a high quality living environment is Singapore’s pride and joy, and is also key to attracting investments and global talents.

It will expand the Active, Beautiful and Clean Waters Programme to transform more water bodies into new and aesthetically pleasing community spaces.

The ministry will also uphold high standards of public health by ensuring good hygiene at food outlets, and step up efforts to keep public spaces litter-free.

SINGAPORE’S clean and green environment helps attract international friends, investors and talent, Environment and Water Resources Minister Yaacob Ibrahim said yesterday.
