Repair Missing Registry Keys – Tips

17 Feb

The Windows registry in your computer is a support system for the operating system and many applications. It exists at a level even more fundamental than that of the operating system, storing important settings for low-level operating system components, as well as those of the kernel, device drivers, and third party applications.

If you were to look at your computer in very general terms as being composed of different layers arranged in a hierarchy of dependence, one viable (and admittedly grossly over-simplified) model of your computer would be the following. Items are list from most basic to most complex level of organization:

1. Physical Hardware

2. Electrical Power System

3. Windows Registry

4. Hardware Drivers

5. Operating System

6. Individual Applications/Software Programs

This arrangement can be seen a hierarchy because each item is dependent the level below it for its proper operation. As you can see, your operating system, hardware drivers and software applications all require that the Windows registry to operate properly.

How it is Structured:

The registry actually consists of two main components: keys and values. The keys are vessels while the values are the vessels’ contents. Another analogy: the keys are like folders and the values are like files stored in those folders. Keys are named using a naming convention very similar to that of Windows folders you would see in the Windows Explorer application, with sub-keys under each key. This is how the registry is arranged hierarchically.

Common Problems with the Registry:

Over time, some or many of the individual registry keys can become damaged. Common causes include manual editing, malware (viruses, Trojans, Adware, etc.), and frequent, normal computer use over time.

Certain Windows utilities allow people to manually edit the registry. However, errors can occur easily during the editing process and can cause serious problems with computer operation.

If you frequently download and install applications from the Internet, any one of them could contain malware which can hurt the system registry by changing settings.

Finally, mere frequent use of your computer over time can result in registry errors. Reason: every time you save or delete a file or make changes to user settings, you are causing information to be written to, read and deleted from your registry. Even computers make mistakes, and over time there can develop big holes in your registry which lead to errors.

Symptoms of Registry Errors:

Symptoms of registry errors can include any number of computer performance issues, including the inability to open certain applications, erratic behavior, and very slow startup and shutdown times.

The Need to Repair Missing Registry Keys:

Of course, for anyone with some level of computer literacy and competence, it is tempting to want to correct registry errors oneself. As mentioned above, the editing of registry keys for the purposes of repair is entirely possible. However, manual editing can actually cause more problems than it solves. Moreover, to even begin editing a registry, you first would need to know where the errors are and how to spot them. This can take even an expert some time to learn.

The best way to repair missing registry keys is to use a registry cleaner-type software. These programs are run quickly and easily and are designed for the sole purposes of finding and fixing computer registries. This is by far the safest way to repair missing keys.

3 Reasons Why the iPad is Not Just a Bigger iPod Touch

05 Feb

Steve Jobs presented the iPad to the world on January 27, 2010. Since that presentation many have been wondering what the major differences are between the new iPad and the old reliable iPod Touch. When compared side by side the iPad does appear to be a blown up version of the iPhone Touch due to its similar layout and button placement. However, upon closer inspection the iPad reveals itself to be the more flexible device. In this article we will examine three ways in which the iPad separates itself from its smaller counterpart.

1) Battery life – The latest version of the iPhone Touch can play music continuously for 30 hours until it needs to be recharged. The iPad is estimated to be able to provide 140 hours of audio playback until it must be recharged. A similar advantage is also expected to be seen for general operation. With over four times the estimated battery life, the iPad clearly comes out ahead.

2) Practicality – Both the iPad and iPod Touch offer the ability to watch movies and read e-books. However, trying to do either activity on the iPod can be a bit of a chore due to its small screen. The iPad’s large screen allows for a richer multimedia experience and expands upon the iPod’s feature set. Full-screen newspaper and book reading, spreadsheet editing and game playing all promise to be more enjoyable on the iPad due to its bigger, brighter and higher definition screen.

3) Faster CPU – The iPad’s processor runs at 1 GHz while the fastest version of the iPod tops out at only 600 MHz. That significant speed difference will be realized with higher definition movies, more graphically demanding games and smoother operation overall. While the iPad will not have the ability to run multiple applications upon release, this could change at any time through an OS update.

While the iPad does not make any significant leaps over the iPod Touch as far as features are concerned, it does come out firmly ahead in terms of usability and technical prowess.

Apple’s iPad Spell the Death of Netbooks?

02 Feb

When Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that netbooks are not better at anything than laptops or smartphones he was partly right and partly wrong. As we all know netbooks are underpowered when compared with 14 or 15 inch laptops. Of course they are portable, but not as portable as a smartphone. Nevertheless, they are better than an iPad in many respects.

The iPad is a 1.5 pound device meant for consuming digital media. Sure, you will find watching videos on an all-screen device more palatable than doing it on a netbook with a keyboard. The iPad doesn’t have an e-Ink display; still it is better than netbooks for reading eBooks.

But a computer, as we know it, is meant for both creating and consuming content. The iPad is good for the latter. What if you want to create content? Don’t we also need to send emails and create documents? Of course, the iPad has an on-screen keyboard. But a lot of people prefer using a physical keyboard than a virtual keyboard. And you will know why when you try entering text using the on-screen keyboard with the tablet placed on a table. Your neck will start aching in no time.

To get around the issue Apple does offer a $69 keyboard dock with the iPad. But it will only work in the portrait mode which leaves you stuck with an unusual 768 x 1024 pixels resolution.

Agreed, netbooks are not the best devices for consuming media. But they are capable of performing everything a computer is supposed to do. Besides, they are cheaper. The iPad starts at $499, whereas a standard netbook is now available for as little as $300.

Netbooks are also capable of multi-tasking; they support Adobe Flash and allow you to choose the operating system you want to run. They are also capable of running full desktop applications.

That said, the iPad is still usable, but not as usable as Steve Jobs would like us to believe. It is good for watching videos that doesn’t require Flash. (iPad doesn’t support Adobe Flash.). You may also use it to read eBooks, but not for prolonged periods. The iPad doesn’t have an e-Ink display and reading eBooks on a standard display will strain your eyes after a while.

A Business ‘Must Have’? The iPad

02 Feb

The launch of the Apple iPad this spring sees the birth of a whole new breed of ‘must have’ gadgetology that will be enormously enticing to a broad range of customers. The most obvious appeal is to the beslippered home user who will wander around the house happily surfing the net, checking email, sharing photos with the family, or who will be found sitting in bed on a Sunday morning watching a film or even reading an e-book.

But what about our poor business folk? Surely they will not want to miss out on the fun, and so will need a good case for making an iPad an essential part of their kit. Whilst it’s certainly not ideally placed as a business machine – it can’t take advantage of Exchange email and doesn’t support business standards such as Virtual Private Networks, for example – there are still quite a few avenues worth exploring.

Most obviously, the sensational look and feel of the machine and its display point towards a fabulous sales tool. Sparkling dynamic presentations or sales videos can be launched with the minimum of fuss in any situation. The machine slips out of the slimmest briefcase, powers up almost instantly, has a purported 10 hr battery life, and can be passed around, even comfortably used standing in the pub.

Another plausible reason for having to buy one is as a research tool. Apart from being a fine web surfer – either wirelessly or over 3G if you stretch the budget – the iPad can be your mobile reference library, enabling easy access any time, anywhere, to shedloads of text books. And then of course there are newspapers and magazines, all downloadable for immediate use.

The iPad is going to hit the ground running in that it will run all the existing iPhone apps, but the fun will really begin when developers bring out purpose built iPad apps. A small survey of developers indicated that they see the iPad as a much more business and productivity oriented machine than the iPhone. Surprisingly, they see the potential in this field as greater than in social networking or even games. Finance, education and medicine were cited as having particularly rich potential. So whilst your business life may have been transformed by the Salesforce or Bloomberg information on the iPhone in your pocket, think of the possibilities to come on the iPad.

Whilst it’s certainly not a laptop replacement, on the side, of course, you will be able to do a little creative work with the revamped iWork suite which enable you to create business standard text documents, spreadsheets and presentations. There is support for MS Office documents. Possibly the biggest omission in the first incarnation of the iPad is a camera, as it seems such an obvious video conferencing machine – Apple will surely have to address this early on!

So whilst initially it could be a bit of a stretch making the business case for this new gizmo, the future for the iPad in business is looking bright. Once the App Store starts to fill up with purpose built iPad apps, and once Apple has added a camera and maybe Exchange compatibility, they may become as ubiquitous as the iPhone or the Blackberry. So get started on your business case and hopefully it won’t be too long before you join the envied ranks of the slippered surfers… strictly out of business hours of course.

Purchasing a Computer and Why

03 Jan

It Is not fair, but purchasing a computer is just evidently easier for some than it’s for others. Those who’ve bought and applied a computer in the past already have a thought of what they need in a new computer. But those who are new to the computer world dismissed in the myriad of choices available.

The short answer to “What should I purchase?” is “The best.” Of course that answer is extremely subjective because “the best” to one person is certainly different to another. Our definition of “the best” is the fastest and the biggest, but even that leaves the computer newbie confused. Here’s a quick rundown of what the computer novice should do and why.

1.    Buy a computer that includes basic peripherals. Every computer can be broken down into four major components: CPU unit, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. For the novice, it’s best to buy a computer that has all of these components included so that when it’s taken home, assembling the computer is a simple matter of plugging things in where they belong. Save the individual purchases of these components for those who have more experience.

2.    Decide what you’ll use the computer for. If you want to use your computer for cruising the web, sending email, or performing simple word-processing or spreadsheet tasks, a computer with the basic components that we just described should suffice. If you want to use a computer to help with a career in multimedia however, you’re going to need to accessorize your system with a scanner, printer, digital camera, tablet, or digicam for example. If you want a computer to help with a career in music, you will need a quality microphone and set of speakers.

3.    Create a budget and stick to it. How much can you afford to spend on a new computer? Although the prices of computers are decreasing, they can still create a hefty expense especially if you need additional peripherals described above. In addition, you’ll need to figure in costs for maintenance, servicing, and insuring.

4.    Start comparison shopping and look for the “fastest and biggest.” By “fastest and biggest,” we mean the computer with the fastest processor, the fastest modem, the biggest memory, and the biggest hard drive capacity. Even if you think that you’ll never need the amount of speed or space available on the market today, it’s important to have in the event that you truly do need that much in the future. Having such a large reserve will cut down on costs when the time comes to upgrade for more than what you may settle for in a computer that offers less.

5.    Stick with the better-known brands. Venturing off the beaten path with lessor-known brands is again, an adventure for those who have more experience with computers. Although those better-known brands may be a tad bit more expensive, the computer novice will appreciate the comfort in purchasing a computer from a business that has a long record of building quality products, and that has the funds available for fulfilling returns, trades, servicing, and warranties.

6.    Select a store. Having an idea of what you want in a computer and what kind of computer that you want, your only task left is to select the place in which you want to buy it. There are a number of places available including computer store outlets, online stores, auction sites, used computer stores, or your friendly neighborhood yard sale. For the computer novice, we recommend buying a computer from a physical store. In  a physical store, you have the opportunity to see the computer of interest in person and ask questions. New computer buyers also have access to store warranties, returns, trades, and services.

These suggestions should give the computer newbie a great start in selecting a quality computer for the first time and they apply to either Windows computers or Apple Macintosh computers. After making these decisions and finally selecting one that fits your needs, you can then venture into the fascinating world of software – a world that is just as grand as the world of hardware!
