200 Million for Smart Grid Technologies

It`s good news for those who seek their effort in helping develop smart grid technologies. If so, the Department of Energy has $3.3 billion in federal stimulus grants for companies and utilities to help develop a smarter, faster power grid.

This powerful electricity network will provide energy independence, global warming and emergency resilience issues. The Department of Energy is orchestrating the wholesale modernization of our nation’s electrical grid. Other responsibilities are coordinating standards development, guiding research, development projects, and reconciling the agendas of a wide range of stakeholders.

The first rounds of applications are due July 29, with future rounds in December 2009 and March 2010 if funding remains.

… The new smart grid uses digital technology for two-way communication between producers and consumers. This technology enables home appliances to use electricity only when it’s abundant and inexpensive. And electricity companies can identify and avoid problems, get information about blackouts and power quality in real time.
